Detroit is the place for many professional sports teams – Hockey’s Red Wings, Baseball’s (Major League) the Tigers, the Lions who are the winners in football once again, Basketball’s the Pistons and Women’s Basketball’s the Shock. There are also other several minor League Baseball team within short drive.
The Detroit Metro area is also near to many Universities including Michigan State University in Lansing, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Wayne State University in Detroit, Adrian College in Adrian, Alma College in Alma, Albion college in Albion, Olivet College in Olivet, and University of Toledo in Ohio. There are also other smaller colleges in the surrounding area.
The basic greasy spoon Greek restaurant, the coney island Restaurants where you can find the mouth-watering Chicken Lemon Soup and the heart-killing coney Dogs. Well, a Coney Dog is a hot dog in buns topped with special coney onion, mustard and chili.
The Detroit Area also has the largest Arabic population outside the Middle East. Many places here are serving the wonderful baklava which is an intensely sweet desert which is almost like a candy. There is also good and bad humus. Going to the right place, you can find few things that are as tasty as the piece of soft pita bread that is dipped into the properly flavored humus. You can eat many wonderful meals here without breaking the bank.
There are three casinos within the city limits and they are MGM Grand, MotorCity and Greektown. Beside the casino, Greektown is Detroit section offering taste of city living in the older days. They also have Greek restaurants.
Another great thing about Detroit is its close proximity to Canada. This was really a great benefit until before the 9/11. Then the city of Windsor awaits just on the river’s other side. You can reach it via underground tunnel or by bridge.
